"Girlfriend" is the lead single from Avril Lavigne's third album The Best Damn Thing. The song is described by Lavigne herself as being "fast, fun, young, bratty, aggressive, confident, cocky in a playful way...all the good stuff." There is also an edited version for radio, because of explicit lyrics.
The features a stronger pop influence and more pop-ish lyrics than her earlier songs. This has polarized fans: some prefer her darker material, but others support the change of direction.
Anyway, the song scored a huge success. The song debuted at number five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Afterwards it rose to number three before becoming Lavigne's first song to reach number one on the Hot 100.
On Youtube alone, this video had until end of April 2007 more than ... take a deep breath now... 17 million views, making it a youtube sky-rocket champion of view stats.
